Shanghai Symphony Orchestra unveils a star-studded new season

Shanghai Symphony Orchestra announced on June 20 a star-studded new 2025-26 music season from Sept 5 to July 3, consisting of 46 visiting artists' performances, 22 orchestra concerts, seven chamber concerts, among others.

A string of internationally-recognized conductors will perform at the Shanghai Symphony Hall in the new season, such as Grammy-award winning JoAnn Falletta, Sir Andras Schiff, Charles Dutoit, Daniel Harding and Jaap van Zweden. Yu Long, artistic director of SSO, will conduct 10 concerts in the new season.

Pipa performer Wu Man will be the first Chinese instrumentalist to be the resident artist of SSO in the new season. She will collaborate with SSO to present three compositions of distinctive styles.

SSO will also join hands with Deutsche Grammophon China to kick off an ambitious new project in the new season. SSO will play under the baton of Maestro Yu the complete 15 symphonies by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75) spanning four music seasons. The recording of the collection will be published by DG in 2029.

The orchestra will play Shostakovich Symphony No 5 and No 7 at two opening concerts of its new season in September, then go on to present Shostakovich Symphony No 8 and No 9 later in this season.
