The Department of Transport of Hainan Province is bracing for an increase in passenger traffic during the 2025 Spring Festival travel rush, with visitor numbers projected to surpass 23.4 million person times.

During the 40-day period from Tuesday to Feb 22, the island's three major airports are expected to accommodate about 47,200 flights transporting roughly 7.85 million passengers.

To meet the travel demands during this year's Spring Festival travel, Haikou Meilan International Airport collaborated with 12 airlines to increase flights on routes.

On the international front, on Feb 3, the airport will launch a direct flight route between Haikou and Tokyo.

The province's major airports have prepared a variety of cultural activities for the first day of the Spring Festival travel rush. Haikou Meilan International Airport is hosting Qiong opera, coconut shell carving, calligraphy and clay sculpting. Sanya Phoenix International Airport and Qionghai Boao International Airport feature multiple New Year photo spots in their terminals to create a festive atmosphere.

The Qiongzhou Strait anticipates a passenger transport volume of 4.97 million and a vehicle transport volume of 1.18 million. About 2.36 million passengers are expected to enter the island, averaging 59,000 daily, with around 580,000 vehicles entering, averaging 14,500 daily.

Peak inbound travel is projected from Jan 23 to 27, while outbound peaks are expected from Jan 22 to 27 and Feb 1 to 5. During these periods, daily outbound vehicles and passengers are forecasted to exceed 20,000 and 100,000, respectively.

Cai Shaojia from Hainan Strait Shipping said that measures for this year's Spring Festival travel rush include establishing special classes for freight vehicles, creating dedicated vegetable transportation channels and launching new services.

Furthermore, the size of service support teams has increased to 11,000, including security personnel, volunteers, cleaners and a dedicated customer service team. The service support team will focus on safety, optimization, capacity enhancement and emergency support.

Two new energy-exclusive transport ships have been put into operation to enhance transportation for new energy vehicles.
