Beijing has warned Washington that its move to insist on using the fentanyl issue to impose tariffs on China will backfire, and urged the United States to correct its wrongdoings and resolve respective concerns through consultations.
Such a move will not solve US concerns but seriously impact dialogue and cooperation between China and the US on drug control, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a daily news briefing on Friday.
"China is one of the world's toughest countries on counternarcotics both in terms of policy and its implementation. Fentanyl is an issue in the US. In the spirit of humanity, China has given support to the US response to this issue," Lin said.
As early as 2019, China announced the decision to officially schedule fentanyl-related substances as a class, becoming the first country in the world to do so.
China has carried out extensive and in-depth counternarcotics cooperation with the US, which is a clear fact for all to see and has been widely acknowledged by various sectors in the US, he added.
