HELSINKI -- Swedish police confirmed on Tuesday evening that about ten people have been killed in a school shooting in Orebro, central Sweden.

"Around 10 people have been killed today," the local police said at a press conference. While investigation and further search are underway, police remain unclear about the specific number of the victims.

They said the shooter suspect is among the deceased, and "the suspected assailant is not known to police." However, police confirmed that initial investigations showed the suspect had acted alone.

The school, known as Risberska Skolan, is an education center that mainly serves adults over the age of 20 but also offers primary and secondary school courses and Swedish language classes for immigrants. It is located about 200 km west of Stockholm.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told Swedish Radio earlier that the incident is "very painful" for the country, and his thoughts are with those affected by such a "terror."
