The China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd has officially become the first Chinese shipbuilder to cross the 100 million deadweight ton mark in terms of total ships completed, according to the Shanghai-based shipyard.

This comes after it delivered FPSO, or the floating production, storage and offloading vessel "Jaguar" to Netherlands-based SBM Offshore on Thursday.

The FPSO is the 22nd vessel delivered by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding so far this year, making the shipbuilder complete its whole-year delivery target a month and a half ahead of schedule.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the company noted a delivery total of 579 ships and offshore platforms, or 125.87 million deadweight tons (dwt).

DWT is a key indicator to measure the transportation capacity of ships, as well as one of the gauges recognized worldwide to measure the construction capacity of a shipbuilding company. Since the delivery of its first ship on June 22, 2003, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding has completed and delivered vessels at a rate of 27 ships, or 4.76 million dwt annually.

These include large cruise ships, bulk carriers, ultra-large ore carriers (VLOC), oil tankers, container ships, ultra-large liquefied petroleum gas carriers (VLGC), FPSO amongst others.
