Regardless of the stance taken by the new US administration, market forces will ensure that China-US economic and trade cooperation continues to forge ahead, said Zhou Mi, senior researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Commerce.
"We need to hear from the market. And that definitely means more cooperation because they (US companies and state-level governments) do see the possibilities of China's market. Those (US) companies and also the (state-level) governments want to cooperate with Chinese companies," Zhou said an interview with ChinaPerspectives.
Zhou said that during Donald Trump's previous term, the 301 tariff policy did not reduce the trade deficit with China; instead, the deficit widened after a few years.
"Imports and exports are based on the resources, technology and industries of these two countries. The market has its own rule. You have to obey that," Zhou said.
