The Starlight Night Market in Jinghong city, Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province, is known for its local delicacies, ethnic costumes and exquisite handicrafts sold at stalls along the Lancang River.

Known as the Mekong River in Southeast Asia, the Lancang is a vital waterway that stretches across China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

The night market is mainly themed on the traditions of the local Dai ethnic group, enriched by the cultural influences of the countries along the river, including Thailand and Cambodia. This multicultural event allows visitors to experience a tapestry of cuisines, traditional attire and cultural performances without traveling abroad.

Drawn to the photogenic lighting and stalls, many young tourists visit the night market to pose in traditional ethnic costumes and share photos on their social media.

The night market hosts over 30 events throughout the year, including water lantern and water-splashing festivals.

Visitors can immerse themselves in colorful activities at the ongoing sizzling roasted chicken festival. The event allows attendees to win free chicken and be dazzled by vibrant performances. The festival runs until Jan 5.

"Infrastructure was upgraded over the past year to enhance the visitor experience, including a new parking lot with a 1,200-vehicle capacity and overall restroom upgrades," said Yang Ying, deputy general manager of Yunnan Jinglan Cultural Tourism Group, which manages the night market.
