A Japanese media producer highlighted that China's animated productions go beyond visual effects and technical innovation, weaving in rich cultural narratives that offer Japanese audiences a deeper insight into Chinese society and family values. The remarks were made during a dialogue in Tokyo on Monday.

"Since 2019, China's animation industry has made remarkable advancements. Even from a Japanese perspective, its progress is dazzling," said Mitsuko Watanabe, vice-president of the Japan-China Film Festival Executive Committee.

The recent Japanese release of the Chinese animated film Nezha: The Demon Child Churns the Sea, also known as Ne Zha 2, has already sparked excitement on social media. Watanabe expressed confidence that the film will strongly resonate with Japanese audiences.

"This mythological tale not only highlights the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture but also reflects the cultural connections between China and Japan," she added.

The animated series Big-Headed Kid and Small-Headed Father also proved to be a hit with Japanese audiences, further showcasing the growing international influence of Chinese cinema.

"These productions are not just about visual effects or technical innovation — they also incorporate rich cultural narratives, allowing Japanese viewers to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese society and family values," Watanabe said.

At the same time, Japanese films continue to enjoy widespread popularity in China. Works like Your Name and One Piece have captivated Chinese audiences, reflecting the distinct appeal of Japanese cinema in its emotional depth and artistic style, she said.

"I strongly believe that Japan and China have great potential for collaboration in film and theater. Whether in anime, live-action films, or documentaries, there are numerous opportunities for cooperation where both countries can leverage their respective strengths to create high-quality productions together," Watanabe said.
