SAGA City of Light, an immersive performance featuring stories of 1930s Shanghai and time-travel experiences, unveiled its Spring Festival Special Edition to celebrate the traditional festival while recreating the city's urban memories.

The special edition will run from Jan 21 to Feb 4 in Xuhui district, Shanghai.

As the first cultural project of the French production company Puy du Fou in China, SAGA City of Light landed in Shanghai in September 2024, after four years of construction with an investment of over 670 million yuan ($92.4 million).

Positioned as an "offline physical film", SAGA City of Light transports audiences back to Shanghai in the Republic of China era (1911to 1949), immersing them in the lively scenes and charm of Shanghai in the shikumen (lane house) and decorative art buildings.

The special Chinese New Year edition features refreshed plots, scenes and props, seamlessly blending traditional Chinese customs with French light and shadow art.

In addition to presenting the limited-edition performance, from Jan 17 to Feb 16, the entire SAGA City of Light building has been transformed into a festive venue, offering activities such as traditional customs experiences, hand-written blessings and paper-cutting art experiences.

"The SAGA City of Light project was born out of Puy du Fou's respect and love for Chinese culture," said Geoffroy Ladet, CEO of Puy du Fou Asia. "With this innovative product, we aim to tell Chinese stories from a global perspective. From the Spring Festival Special Edition performance to the presentation of intangible cultural heritage experiences, SAGA City of Light is not only a product of Sino-French cultural integration but also a unique platform for promoting traditional Chinese culture and showcasing the charm of local heritage."
