The China International Import Expo (CIIE), underway in Shanghai between Nov 5 and 10 as the world's first national-level expo focusing on imports, is again showcasing one of its highlights — the Medical Innovation Incubation Zone — to gather innovative forces to promote global cooperation.

The Medical Innovation Incubation Zone, with its unique attributes, has been a feature for four years in a row of CIIE, which is becoming a critical platform for international procurement, investment promotion, cultural exchange and open cooperation.

James Deng, general manager of BD China, said the zone's exhibits this year are more expansive than ever, with over 40 projects on display and dividing into the Switzerland Pavilion and a Premium Pavilion.

Covering a wide range of products, from dental care to diabetes self-management tools and quantum-assisted therapeutic devices — all of which reflect the innovation prowess of Swiss and European companies — the zone intends to let visitors leverage resources from various sources, he said.

Deng noted beyond the exhibits, the incubation zone has extended its reach through two seminars, held in cooperation with the Henan and Tianjin governments, aiming to help companies better understand the Chinese market and policy environment to foster financing and collaboration.

He stressed that the platform, which not only attracts attention from companies but also enables them to leverage resources from various sources, aims to create a rare development opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Adhering to a "selective entry and selective exit" policy, the incubation zone has chosen 12 of the top projects for a live roadshow, with awards presented during the event to encourage broader participation, Deng said.

While expressing his high expectations for the 7th CIIE, Deng hopes that the SMEs can seize more opportunities for innovative development through participation in the expo.

He emphasized that CIIE's high visibility provides a platform for companies to showcase themselves and attract attention from across China and abroad.

Zhen Xiao, CEO of Swiss Centers, said that the Swiss Center has been serving Swiss companies in Shanghai for 24 years. This year, the center has brought 14 innovative companies in the medical device field to the CIIE, each holding a leading position in their respective fields.

Xiao stressed that the CIIE is offering Swiss companies a valuable opportunity to engage with local governments, professionals and industry leaders.

In light of current economic uncertainties, Xiao is optimistic about the future of business cooperation between China and Europe.

He noted that despite fluctuating uncertainties, China remains an attractive market, especially in the healthcare sector, where the demand in China aligns well with the innovative capabilities of Swiss companies.

As a leading company in the medical devices industry, BD plays a significant role in global medical innovation, Deng said, noting that over the past four years, BD has visited some of the world's top technology parks to refine an incubation model that aims to create a high-quality platform for companies to enter the Chinese market and develop sustainably.

While sharing BD's future plans to help Chinese companies invest abroad, creating a dual-circulation model of "bringing in and going out" that will foster innovation in China and present a new phase of China's reform and opening-up to the outside world, Deng said BD has also expanded its efforts in line with the CIIE's goals of high-standard opening-up and development, exploring policies to offer companies a more comprehensive and deeper platform.

Deng stated BD's network includes 43 member companies in the Expo Alliance and numerous top funds in the Mednovation Club, providing all companies with an attractive platform.

It has been learned that in the Medical Innovation Incubation Zone, the close collaboration between Chinese and European companies, the convergence of innovative technologies and market needs, and the supportive interaction between policies and corporate growth are a vogue.

These factors can help drive innovation in the healthcare industry and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to global health initiatives, Deng said, adding that the incubation zone has once again demonstrated its crucial role in promoting international cooperation and advancing medical innovation.
