The country's first whole-space unmanned system demonstration island zone was officially put into operation in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, as a press conference on the low-space economy was held in the city on Oct 18.
Spanning 0.11 square kilometers, the island is located in the middle of the Shengze Lake in the northeast of the Xiangcheng district of Suzhou.

Unmanned vehicle system nowadays covers the entire space from the ground to the sky. No matter for passengers, cargo or any other uses, they require a relatively closed testing space to strengthen coordination and security during operation. Hence, the whole-space unmanned system was set up, with all the basic equipment integrated in the whole space, meeting comprehensive testing demands for all kinds of unmanned vehicles.
At present, the completed projects on the demonstration island comprise mainly the intelligent interconnected car parking lots, docking areas for automated cruises, landing platforms and testing bases for eVTOL, while the northwest part of the island is still kept for the second phase of construction.

The Shengze Lake is the only natural lake in Jiangsu province that meets the national class II water quality standard. The negative oxygen ion content in the vicinity is as high as 2000 per cubic centimeter, which is 20 times better than the urban area. The days with good air quality account for 90 percent of the whole year. These provide superior natural conditions guarantee the testing data for the unmanned vehicles to be more correct.
Before the establishment of the demonstration island, the Suzhou-headquartered company for the project had rented a small hangar for about two years in the Liyang Changdanghu Airport in Changzhou, which was 200 kilometers away.

Now the island provides a relatively independent closed space where more security and flexibility can be guaranteed for flights of unmanned drones, which significantly reduces the time of research and development for the fast-developing eVTOL industry.
