Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed hope on Wednesday that Hungary will be successful in encouraging the European Union to adopt a more active and pragmatic policy toward China and build a positive outlook for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in Beijing.

The central European country is set to take over the rotating EU presidency in July.

Calling Hungary an independent European country with unique influence that has long taken a friendly policy toward China, Wang said Beijing hopes Budapest will push the EU to view China's development in a rational and friendly way, and help strengthen strategic communication between China and the EU.

China appreciates Hungary's commitment to upholding peace and stability in Europe amid the turbulent international situation, Wang said. And China also appreciates Hungary's determination to deepen cooperation, despite interference and pressure, he added.

Fruitful outcomes in bilateral cooperation not only benefit people from both countries, but also strongly prove that China is a partner for Europe, rather than a rival, while standing for opportunities, instead of challenges, Wang said.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Hungary.

Noting new opportunities for bilateral relations, Wang said China is willing to maintain close communication with Hungary, deepen political mutual trust, advance cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and push bilateral relations to a higher level.

Szijjarto expressed opposition to "de-couple" from China. Viewing China as a threat will only lead to missed opportunities, while treating China as a partner is the right choice, he said. And he added that Hungary welcomes China to increase investment in the country and is willing to deepen cooperation with China in various areas.
