The United Nations Office in Nairobi on Wednesday held colorful celebrations to mark Chinese New Year-the year of the Wood Snake.
Attendees were treated to enthralling performances by martial artists and opera performers from central China's Henan province, as well as Chinese arts and mouthwatering Chinese cuisine.
Speaking at the event, Zainab Hawa Bangura, the director general of the United Nations Office in Nairobi, said the snake in the Chinese zodiac symbolizes intuition and strategy and good element represents growth and plan.

Bangura expressed hope that the year of the wood snake will bring forth common wisdom to manage the challenges that the world is facing currently.
"May peace, prosperity, good health and increased compassion towards each other live and abide in every one of us all year long," she said.

This year's Spring Festival is the first after the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization officially inscribed the celebrations on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on Dec 4, 2024.
Guo Haiyan, the Chinese ambassador to Kenya, said Spring Festivals entrusts the Chinese people's feelings of humanity, family and country.

She said it's the most vivid embodiment of China's excellent traditional culture, the oldest inheritance, and an opportunity to understand the Chinese people and their culture.
Guo said China is committed to deepen reforms, concentrate on high quality development, increase efforts to improve people's livelihood and well-being, and injecting new impetus into world development and prosperity.

Jane Makori, deputy director for Asia and Pacific affairs at Kenya's foreign ministry, said Spring Festival is one of the opportunities of bringing people together.
He said by being recognized by UNESCO, Spring Festival will give the world a glimpse of Chinese culture.
"I am honored to represent the government of Kenya on this auspicious occasion as we join our friends from China to celebrate Spring Festival," she said.
