To mark World Environment Day on Friday, the State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company has announced major achievements in reducing carbon emissions and promoting green practices. Through its Power Renewable Resources Recycling Center, the company has recycled a total of 26,700 metric tons of decommissioned power grid materials, cutting carbon emissions by approximately 1.12 million tons since the center's inception in 2022.

Located in Chongqing's Yongchuan district, the center serves as a green disassembly and sorting hub for decommissioned power grid materials. It employs a comprehensive closed-loop management model to meticulously disassemble cables, steel-core aluminum strands, electric meters, and transformers, enhancing the reuse value of obsolete materials. This initiative is one of the company's major green demonstration projects.

Wang Kaicai, the on-site director of the center, highlighted these accomplishments during an interview on Thursday. Since its launch, the facility has revitalized over 8,400 decommissioned transformers and processed more than 8,500 tons of discarded cables through centralized dismantling and public auctions.

"The materials dismantled at our center are highly sought after by downstream manufacturers," Wang noted. Specialized equipment has been developed to process each category of material, yielding high-quality recyclable metals such as iron, aluminum and copper. Last year alone, the center recovered over 2,000 tons of copper, demonstrating the efficiency of its recycling processes.

Wang also emphasized the environmental benefits of recycling aluminum. "Each ton of recycled aluminum saves 95 percent of the energy used in production compared to primary aluminum smelting and reduces carbon emissions by 13.35 tons," he explained.

Another highlight of the company's green initiatives includes the Jinshan 500-kilovolt Substation in Chongqing's Liangjiang New Area and the Shibanpo 110-kV Substation in Yuzhong district. These substations have been seamlessly integrated with the architectural features of local stilted buildings, creating aesthetically pleasing power facilities that harmonize with the natural environment and urban landscape.

The center's achievements have been showcased at many significant domestic exhibitions, including the inaugural China International Supply Chain Expo, held in late 2023 in Beijing. Moreover, the center was recognized as a model case in the "Zero-Waste City" initiative by the Basel Convention Regional Center for Asia and the Pacific.
