Chaoyang district in Beijing revealed an ambitious target to become the first destination for international tourists arriving in Beijing during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30).

"The district will cultivate an internationalized and convenient environment for global shoppers by expanding and upgrading duty-free shops and 'instant tax refund' shopping areas," said Chen Feng, director of the district's commercial bureau, at a news conference during the district's two sessions, the annual meetings of the local top legislature and political advisory body, on Wednesday.

Statistics indicate that the district boasts over 100 commercial complexes, with more than 2,000 flagship stores. It is home to 30 percent of the city's teahouses, 50 percent of its cafes, 60 percent of its Michelin-starred restaurants, and 70 percent of its Black Pearl restaurants.

During the following five years, the district plans to renovate its popular commercial complexes such as the Blue Island Tower, The Place, and Yansha Youyi Shopping Cities, according to Chen.
