The Chongqing leg of this year's Guizhou Village Super League tournament kicked off on Friday night in Fengdu county, Southwest China's Chongqing.

Following the opening ceremony, a football match unfolded between Fengdu and Guizhou's Rongjiang county, the birthplace of the immensely popular soccer events known as the Guizhou Village Super League or Cun Chao.

Since 2023, the Village Super League has gained immense popularity in China and internationally, buoyed by the game's widespread appeal among locals and the region's ethnic culture.

Earlier this year, Fengdu and Rongjiang signed an agreement designating Fengdu as the exclusive host for the Chongqing leg of the national tournament.

According to Wang Weiyu, deputy director of the Chongqing event's organizing committee, 28 teams from Fengdu will participate in the event from March to July, along with teams from other districts and counties in Chongqing. They will be comprised of students, nine-to-fivers and villagers.

The winning team will represent Chongqing in the national Guizhou Village Super League tournament in August.

The Chongqing event was also highlighted by this year's Fengdu Temple Fair, running from March 29 to April 6. This national intangible cultural heritage, originating from the Fengdu Incense Fair, dates back over 2,000 years to the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316). It thrived during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), before being reinstated in 1988, according to the local government.

The event features blessing ceremonies and parades, immersing spectators in the local "Ghost City" folk culture. This display is drawing in millions of residents and tourists.
