The Xizang autonomous region has witnessed a surge in its aviation industry in recent years, with a particular focus on the burgeoning field of general aviation. Government initiatives and strategic planning have propelled the sector to new heights, igniting a wave of enthusiasm for low-altitude economic activity across the region.

General aviation is a broad category that covers various non-commercial, low-altitude flights related to recreational flying, agricultural work, search and rescue, and many others.

Reports from the region's development and reform commission reveal impressive statistics for the period from January to September. General aviation operations in Xizang have recorded nearly 1,075 flight hours and 899 flights.

Additionally, aerial drones have been deployed for various purposes, accumulating 2,360 flight hours and 4,720 flights, marking a significant step toward normalized operations in areas such as aviation rescue, forest protection, aerial inspections and drone logistics transportation.

A milestone was reached on Oct 10, 2023, when charter tourism by air transport was officially inaugurated in Xizang. This initiative allows tourists to embark on flights aboard executive jets or helicopters, offering breathtaking views of iconic landmarks in Xizang.

He Yao, deputy director of the region's development and reform commission, emphasized the transformative impact of aviation development in the region. Overcoming historical constraints imposed by geography and logistical limitations, the region has seen a remarkable evolution of general aviation from a nascent industry into a thriving sector. Given Xizang's vast territory and sparse population, the necessity and potential of developing the general aviation industry have become increasingly apparent.

In a recent display of readiness and capability, a large-scale earthquake relief exercise was conducted in the region's northern Nagchu in May.

Song Zan, general manager of Lhasa Pengkang General Airport, said that helicopters were deployed for comprehensive reconnaissance of the disaster area, swift delivery of firefighting personnel, air-dropping of relief supplies and evacuation of injured individuals.

The simulated emergency response exercise — "Emergency Mission Xizang 2024" — showcased the professionalism and proficiency of the region's aviation industry in handling crisis situations, he said.

Lhasa Pengkang General Airport serves as a pivotal investment and operational platform for general and transport aviation in the region. Its comprehensive services span the entire aviation industry chain, supporting various sectors and contributing to the overall growth of the aviation sector in Xizang.

As low-altitude flights become increasingly popular, low-altitude tourism has emerged as an ascendant trend in travel consumption. Lhasa Xueying General Aviation, a prominent player in this field, has introduced a range of captivating sightseeing routes, catering to the growing demand for unique aerial experiences in Xizang.

With a track record of success in medical rescue missions, aerial inspections, forestry operations, emergency responses and aerial sightseeing, Lhasa Xueying General Aviation continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Xizang's aviation industry. Having completed over 40 medical rescue missions and numerous search and rescue operations, the company has logged an impressive 6,872 flight hours and 17,121 sorties, solidifying its position as a key player in the region's aviation sector.
