At the 5th edition of the festival in 2023, Tobias Biancone, director general of ITI, announced that he will be inviting Samoan theater artist Lemi Ponifasio to create a production.
According to Biancone, the production is a piece rooted in Chinese ethnic culture, yet created with a contemporary vision.

The production is enriched by the poems of Jidi Majia, a poet and cofounder of the theater festival. It is performed entirely by local actors, who embody the Yi ethnic cultural elements such as folk songs, ceremonies, farming dance and Torch Festival traditions.
Running until Nov 19, around 100 productions from 11 countries, including France, Germany, Japan and Brazil, are being staged in Xichang.
