The 2024 World Congress on Internal Combustion Engines, kicked off in the northern Chinese municipality of Tianjin on Saturday and will run until Monday.

With the theme "Green, Reliable, Intelligent, Efficient", the event was jointly organized by the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines and Tianjin University.

Drawing nearly 40 academicians from China and abroad, along with scientists, entrepreneurs and technology workers from over 20 countries, the congress aimed to deliberate on the future development of internal combustion engines in the context of "dual carbon" challenges — China vows to reach its carbon emissions peak before 2030 and becoming carbon neutral before 2060.

Participants unanimously acknowledged the indispensable role of internal combustion engines in driving global energy transformation and promoting economic and social development. They emphasized the potential revitalization of the internal combustion engine industry through the use of carbon-neutral and zero-carbon fuels.

Jin Donghan, president of both the 2024 World Congress on Internal Combustion Engines and Tianjin University, said: "In the domains of transportation, engineering machinery, and long-distance shipping, internal combustion engines remain the primary driving force, holding significant potential to advance energy conservation and carbon reduction. Through this congress, our aim is to actively explore pathways to achieve 'carbon neutrality' in internal combustion engine technology, thereby contributing to the global industry's progress and enhancing societal well-being."

Rick Boom, president of the International Council on Combustion Engines, urged the global combustion engine industry to take collective actions, emphasizing that "the congress will build a comprehensive platform that promotes collaborative innovation and facilitates the harmonious development for the industry".

Tianjin University, having established China's first national key laboratory in the field of internal combustion engines, has achieved a series of groundbreaking milestones over the past 30 years, securing 18 national-level scientific and technological awards.

During the opening ceremony, Weichai Power Co Ltd unveiled the world's first commercialized diesel engine with a base engine brake thermal efficiency exceeding 53 percent, marking a new milestone for the industry.

The product received certification from TUV SUD, a global testing, certification and inspection solution provider based in Germany, during the event.

Last year, Tianjin University restructured to establish the State Key Laboratory of Engines, focusing on "efficiency, zero carbon and intelligence" as primary research directions for the future, aiming to significantly contribute to the country's "dual carbon" goals.

Jin said: "Tianjin stands as a significant hub for China's internal combustion engine industry, with strong foundations in research and development, manufacturing, testing, and component production. The convening of the congress holds particular significance for both the city and the internal combustion engine industry."

Initiated by the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines in 2018, the congress serves as a comprehensive technical exchange event for the global internal combustion engine industry, with the participation of countries, regions and international organizations.

Held every three years, it encompasses international academic exchanges, summit forums, promotion of technical achievements, high-end product exhibitions and on-site technical inspections.

This year's congress invited renowned experts and scholars from the United States, Germany, Britain, Canada, Japan, Spain and other countries to present conference reports.
