A total of 12 universities in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong SAR entered the top 100 global ranking, with Tsinghua University taking the 16th spot, followed by Peking University at 17th and the University of Hong Kong at 31st, according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Buoyed by its strong research and teaching performance, Tsinghua won the first place among universities in Asia, and saw its world ranking rise to 16th from 58th in 2011.
The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators that measure an institution's performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook, with 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions included.
China's Nanjing University entered the top 100 for the first time at the 95th spot.
