Volunteers and telecommunications workers have delivered food and emergency supplies and restored communications to communities cut off by flooding and landslides in Hengzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
In Yunbiao township, fruit shop owner Zhou Bin and his wife organized more than 30 volunteers to make 2,000 zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) for displaced residents and rescue workers. Using nine stoves, the group worked for six hours overnight before delivering the food to a temporary resettlement site at 7:30 am Thursday.

Some villagers said they had gone nearly three days without a proper meal. Zhou later continued preparing noodles and fried rice noodles for rescue teams.
"Many veterans and other local residents are doing what they can to help," Zhou said. "I'm grateful that I can contribute."
In Zhenlong township, landslides damaged roads and disrupted power and communications, preventing supply vehicles from reaching some mountain villages. A 60-year-old motorcyclist surnamed Lin, from Jilin province, joined other riders in carrying emergency supplies along muddy and damaged mountain roads.

China Mobile workers rushed to restore communications in the township. On Wednesday, Zhang Huanzhang joined a 10-member emergency team and trekked for more than 20 hours through forests strewn with mud and fallen trees. The team installed a portable satellite base station, restoring Zhenlong's communications with the outside world.
