The 8th China-International Organ Donation Conference and the Belt and Road Symposium on Organ Donation and Transplantation International Cooperation Development kicked off in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on Sunday, building a platform for Sino-foreign officials, experts and scholars to strengthen exchanges and cooperation.
More than 750 domestic and international experts and scholars from nearly 20 countries and regions engaged in extensive, in-depth discussions on promoting the healthy development of organ donation and transplantation during the three-day event.
According to the Report on the Development of Organ Donation and Transplantation in China (2024), the newly registered volunteers for human organ donation reached more than 364,000 in China last year, bringing the country's total number of human organ donation volunteers to 7.01 million.
By the end of 2024, the voluntary registration rate for human organ donation per 10,000 people came to 49.8 in China.
In 2024, there were a total of 181,327 patients with organ failure waiting for organ transplantation in the country, including 150,969 waiting for kidney transplantation, 25,100 for liver transplantation, 3,655 for heart transplantation, and 1,593 for lung transplantation.
Last year, China completed a total of 11,249 human organ donations, including 6,744 cases, or 59.95 percent, of cadaveric organ donations and 4,505 cases, or 40.05 percent, of living donations.
A total of 24,684 organ transplantation surgeries were performed in China last year.
