Early Sunday morning, Zhonghe village in western Guangdong province was struck by a landslide following a day of heavy rains from Typhoon Wutip. Thanks to timely evacuations, no casualties were reported among the village's 25 households and 57 residents.

At 0:58 am, village cadre Liu Mingfang used a loudspeaker to urgently instruct residents to leave immediately.

At around 4 am, a landslide triggered by the downpour sent muddy water crashing down, submerging half of the village at the foot of the mountain in minutes. The evacuated villagers, already sheltered at a temporary resettlement site 100 meters away, watched in relief as the disaster unfolded.

In the hours before the landslide, Liu and her colleagues navigated flooded roads with flashlights, going door-to-door to wake residents and coordinate the evacuation, authorities reported.

Born in 1979, Liu was elected as a village cadre in July 2018 and became a member of the Communist Party of China in December 2020. Having engaged in disaster prevention and reduction work for years, Liu has now become experienced in this field.
