On Friday, a former senior legislator of Hunan province was accused of accepting over 134 million yuan ($18.5 million) in bribes at a court trial on Friday.

The Hainan No 1 Intermediate People's Court held a public trial for Peng Guofu, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial People's Congress.

The prosecution alleged that Peng exploited his various positions from 2004 to 2023 to provide assistance to related units and individuals in project contracting, business operations and job promotions.

He was accused of illegally accepting over 134 million yuan in bribes, either directly or through others. The prosecution requested that Peng be held criminally liable for the crime of accepting bribes.

During the trial, the prosecution presented relevant evidence, and Peng and his defense team conducted a cross-examination. Peng made a final statement, expressing remorse and admitting guilt.

The court announced it will deliver its verdict at a later date.
