On Wednesday, the Lancang-Mekong Media Tourism Promotion Cooperation Initiative was launched to boost tourism in the Lancang-Mekong region at an event in Southwest China's Chongqing.
The activity is part of the Chongqing International Travel Agent Conference 2024, which kicked off one day earlier and will run until Friday. The promotional symposium was held to showcase the premium cultural and tourism routes and products of the Lancang-Mekong region.

"The implementation of the visa-free policy has greatly facilitated Chinese tourists to travel to Malaysia," said Lee Thai Hung, deputy director-general of the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board, at the conference's opening ceremony. Malaysia has been designated as the guest country of this year's event. He added that in the first three months after the visa-free policy began, the number of Chinese tourists to Malaysia increased by 30 percent year-on-year.
According to Tao Xiaofeng, deputy director-general of the General Office of the Chongqing Municipal Government, the municipality is accelerating its efforts to become a world-renowned cultural and tourism destination, a national model for high-quality cultural and tourism development and a leading area for integrated cultural and tourism development in China's western region.

In the first three quarters of this year, the municipality received 328 million tourists, a 10.1 percent increase year-on-year, including 760,000 inbound tourists, an increase of 222.4 percent. The total number of inbound tourists is expected to exceed one million for the entire year.
